Bro,
Kelah is a protected species. You should not buy or keep this fish. BTW my aquarium shops in KL do sell Kelah hijau. |

Those juvenile kelah in the aquarium shops, r they caught in the wild or farm breed? I get conflicting answers whenever I ask.

Mostly if not all are from the wild! Unless fries from overseas or east m'sia.
In west m'sia no one ever succesfully breed them except few months ago in Pahang... i dun think any of those will b found in aquarium shop tho!
Barely a month after SPM i need to go college pulak, sigh! Give me a break!

I've heard from my colleague (he's an old-skool angler) of these cases with aquarium shops in Peninsula:
1. Knowingly and intentionally sell "some" kelah which are actually "mixed together" with lots of tengas fry. It's hard to tell which is which (not impossible) when they're really young. Maximum income for the aquarium shop owner.
2. Not knowingly sell kelah which are actually tengas. When questioned whether it is tengas or kelah, shop owner not sure themselves! Apparently, the fries came from their trusted source. So, go figure...
Regardless what the situation is, fact is the aquarium shop owners are aware that kelah is rare, hard to come by and protected. Instead of using this knowledge to go against keeping/selling kelah, they use that as an explanation for the high selling price!
As for me, I can't differentiate the kelah and the tengas no matter how hard I try! Whatever the case, I think it's best to leave both the kelah and tengas where they really belong - in the wild. |

| i know of one or two places to get kelah around kenyir area. Mostly orang kampung who sell this as income supplement. However kejor(kelah hijau) is cheaper and easier to get. for the people around here kelah is kelah merah... kelah hijau means nothing to them. |

Looking at the other end of the picture, hope come we dont have some people releasing kelahs and tengas as they do so wantonly with Pbs, JC's, Flower Horn, etc? They provide a much much better fight then the Pbs, etc!

| Aquarium shop in seapark(Irene)sells them. Quite reasonably priced.Don't really encourage u to buy it if they are caught from the wild as they will refuse to eat if confined in an aquarium. |

RR, For your info, a friend of mine who also runs an aquarium shop in Shah Alam has been releasing some kelah fries in to the Shah Alam lake. They were about 2 - 3 inches when released and now they are about 1 ft long according to him. He released about 2 bags worth of fries.

Nowdays, no to hard to find kelah juvenile. It has been sold and can easily find since the successfully breeding of Kelah few years back.
I think at Pudu (Jalan Pasar) we can find Kelah Merah Juvenile, also can be find at Diamond UK Aquarium. The price is not so expensive if compare to Arowana etc.

| There's this aquarium shop in Taipan that used to sell them. Anything from 2-15kgs. I'm not sure if they're from the wild, cause the owner feeds them with pellets and they go into a feeding frenzy. Quite interesting stuff, watching a huge kelah thrashing around looking for food. |
